BIG KNOB GRANGE FAIR

336 Grange Road  |  New Sewickley Township  |  Rochester, PA 15074  |  (724) 774-7093

Thank you for making the 2019 Big knob Grange Fair a huge success!

78th  Annual Big Knob Grange Fair

THE FAIR FOR 2020 HAS BEEN CANCELLED
Big Knob Grange No. 2008
336 Grange Road, New Sewickley Township, Rochester, PA 15074

June 1, 2020
For Immediate Release;  Contact Bill Steel, 724 462 5524

It is with sadness that Big Knob Grange announces the cancellation of the 2020 Fair which was to be held September 1-5.

The Fair Committee reviewed many options and after much discussion of the issues facing them, voted unanimously to recommend cancellation of the fair due to the many questions concerning the area’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and how that would affect attendance, as well as our need to ensure each patron’s wellbeing.
Big Knob Grange Fair has been a “free fair” for all of its 77 years of existence. We  take pride in our dinners, entertainment, exhibits and other activities. Not since 1950 when the PA Turnpike Commission took our property on Glen Eden Road to extend the Turnpike to Ohio, have we missed conducting the annual fair for the community.
We pledge to our many vendors, exhibitors, sponsors, and volunteers that work will begin immediately to plan for the 2021 fair, scheduled for Aug. 31 – Sept. 4. 2021
We ask for your understanding of our decision to cancel, and hope that you’ll put next year’s fair on your calendar now.

Sincerely yours,

Bill Steel, President
Big Knob Grange

OUR “NOT REQUIRED” ADMISSION FEE
We pride ourselves as being the only free Fair we know of in Pennsylvania. We are again asking attendees of the fair to bring
non-perishables to be donated to the Unionville Food Pantry as a “not required” admission fee. There will be a Collection area in the Main Hall of the Grange. We would like to see the collection area overflowing with items for the food bank and will be able to do it with you help. Remember it has been moved to the Main Hall of the Grange.

The Unionville Food Pantry is a community food pantry, located at Unionville Methodist Church and run by Compassionate Ministries of Unionville UMC under the direction of Jo Shane. It is supported by local churches, organizations and Freedom Schools. It is a community effort to feed and clothe those in need in New Sewickley Township, Freedom, Rochester and New Brighton areas. The pantry is open the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month from 6-8 pm. In the week writing this article, three new families used the Panty for the first time, a total of 12 new clients. In total, there are about 40 families using the program. At the fair, we would like to stock the pantry with pancake mixes and syrup, paper products, peanut butter, jelly, snack crackers, pasta and sauce, canned goods, soup, or any non-perishable item with a good use-by date.
The Pantry also has a need for clothing and can serve as a go between for furniture items. They also have some handicap items available. If you know of someone that needs their help, you can call Unionville UMC at (724) 843-0862.
ONLY FOOD STAPLES AND PAPER PRODUCTS OR MONETARY DONATIONS AT THE FAIR, PLEASE.

Fair History

Picture
An Indoor Circus fair was held in December of 1937. In September of 1938, the first outdoor Fair was held and realized a profit of $252.20.  The Annual Fair was held each September.  On July 15, 1942, it was voted not to hold a Fair that year, due to the national Emergency (World War II).  The Fair was not held again until September of 1946.  It continued from this time, with the permanent date of the weekend before Labor Day, being established on January 18, 1950.

The Fair was discontinued again, for the years 1950 and 1951, due to the construction of the new hall.  It has continued, each year since 1952, until the present time.  After the war, a Fair Committee was appointed by the Master to serve for three years.  Two members were dropped each year and two new members appointed.  For several years, a car was raffled as a fund raiser.  Many new buildings have been added to the Fairgrounds over the years, with the track area being re-constructed in the last couple of years and the new bleachers added.  A feature of the early Fairs was a horse-shoe pitching contest.  The Fair presently runs for five days, under the supervision of an Executive Board and has an estimated attendance of 40,000.
